Hannah Gamble Opening Remarks for October

Welcome to the first October
of our household's undoing.
So many objects to say
goodbye to. You'll recall September,
when I took off my shoes
and was glad for it—
only sometimes
are tearful goodbyes appropriate.
Like when I took your body
off of my daily usage body.
There was the sound
of ice, spittle, redwoods.
Often I'm unsure
about propriety: The sounds
we made goodbying
seemed like the right ones,
but who can tell in this light.
