Once there was a girl who woke up running. Once there was a girl who wasn't watching time; kissed her parents one and the other and went to bed running, woke up running.
What's burning under the bed, she asked her mom in the morning. Her mom said, that's a door. And when the door's burned right through, said her mom, slip out. To give that girl a lead position, the mom admitted later, is asking me to ignore my fears entirely. I can't do that. Dad smiled and stroked her arm, which appeared to her not at all. The fire burned on but the flames never rose higher and so soon it was time; the girl slipped out of bed into the abyss the fire left behind.
